#SUM_MER_2025

This summer, I will present my new work точка at the international exhibition for nonviolence, #SUM_MER_2025.

The word точка (“Tochka”) is Russian for a reinforced concrete pillbox—small fortified military outposts constructed to halt enemy advances. These structures were commonly built along coastlines or strategic points during World War II and the Vietnam War, equipped with machine guns for defense.

Guam still bears traces of such fortifications. Several tochka structures remain on the island, built by the former Japanese military to fend off U.S. forces during World War II.

For this exhibition, I focused on two window frames of a tochka that still stands in the ocean resort area of Tumon Bay. It’s not difficult to imagine gun barrels once protruded from those openings. Yet, I believe that even during the war, the view from those windows—the serene coastline—remained unchanged.

This contradiction—violence housed within a view of beauty—moved me deeply. I felt compelled to capture the scene on four painted and drawn panels. To me, this work naturally belongs in an exhibition devoted to the theme of nonviolence.
