Artist Statement

Pressure is a powerful force that transforms form.

The movement of the earth’s plates, the pressure of water from the ocean, the atmospheric pressure that creates typhoons. And in the psyche, the tension of the demands and expectations of others.
We are transformed by the pressure of unimaginable disasters.

I also realized that I am a body part of the island of Guam.
When we look at the storm clouds over the ocean, they are a manifestation of our emotions.

The countless bubbles from the movement of the waves are our cells.
Palm fronds in the strong wind are our hair clinging to our cheeks.
The roots that seep into the earth of trees that never fall are our blood vessels, and limestone is our teeth.

So what is the best pressure, moderate pressure?
Now, with clear purpose and intention, I want to find the alchemy that brings out our highest capacity.

This exhibition “Pressure” was my first solo exhibition in Guam. I presented pencil drawings, acrylic paintings, resin sculptures, and short video works that recorded sculptures and drawings to the beach that I made from the time I moved to Guam in 2019 until 2023.

Typhoon Marwar hit Guam just before the exhibition was to be presented. I incorporated this great force of nature into the exhibition concept; atmospheric pressure, water pressure, and even spiritual meaning. Pressure is a powerful transforming force, and we are also transformed by it. I aimed to provide local viewers with a new and unique perspective on Guam’s symbiosis with nature.
