Overview

The new installation, Hai Kaburi is a refiguration of her exhibit Awafuku and Komefuku that was represented at Arts Festival Echigo Tsumari Triennial in 2003 combined with the work that reflects the 2014 transformation of her hometown, Fukushima. Awafuku and Komefuku is a folk tale similar to the Cinderella story and Hai Kaburi is the Japanese title of Cinderella. Twelve years have passed since the creation of Awafuku and Komefuku and now Furukawa, in 2015 is a stepmother to two daughters. In re-reading the book of Hai Kaburi Furukawa, born in Aizu, Fukushima, feels “Hai” is a metaphor for “radioactivity”. Here, in this site-specific installation, the artist rethinks the meaning of “Cinderella / Hai Kaburi” by combining old and new works. Furukawa asks the question “where are the glass slippers in a world where the truth is hard to see.”
