Overview

Furukawa re-read The Chieko Poems by Takamura Kotaro from a gendered perspective and released an installation piece that turned a samurai residence into a work of art, displaying oil paintings, engravings, oversized inkjet prints, and resin objects. “What if Kotaro had recognized Chieko’s creativity sooner?” “What if Chieko had achieved happiness as an artist with Kotaro, pouring herself into painting, visiting exhibitions and galleries with art students, and expressing herself freely?” With these hypotheses in mind, Furukawa attempted to reveal the social conditions that surrounded female artists.
